The TooleyCDG Summer STEM Academy began in 2022 with a kick-off block party leading up to an 8 week program including coding, robotics, solar powered cars, and rocketry with weekly NASA mentors. The program culminated in a field trip to NASA KSC. The scholars were required to spend at least 30 minutes a day on reading, language arts, and math. By the end of the summer we saw outstanding academic progress.

The 2023 Academy upped the game with more coding & robotics, but with the addition of 3-D printing, mini-computers, and virtual reality. A coding competition in the NASA Artemis Arena in week 3 challenged the scholar’s coding skills in week three. The kids were rewarded with two trips to Kennedy Space Center to get up close and personal with the assets of world’s premiere spaceport.

The 2023 Summer STEM Academy was followed up by the Tooley Tech Tournament. From October through March, two teams, the Moon Crew and the Future Four, competed by building and coding a robot to navigate a Mars terrain. The winning team, the Future Four, coded the most precise path. Scholars won cash prizes, a Dash robot, and an Amazon Kindle tablet.

Plans are underway for the 2024 Summer STEM Academy in partnership with NASA, Jacobs Technology, Brevard Prevention Coalition and the Housing Authority of Brevard County.
